Kinner Kailash trek

Kinner Kailash Trek

This trek is rather difficult and recommended for experienced trekkers. On the way there is the Charang La pass at a height of 5,300 metres. The Kinnaur Kailash is revered by both the Buddhists and the Hindus.  According to popular belief, the Kinnaur Kailash is the winter abode of Lord Shiva and he holds a meeting of all gods and goddesses in January at this place.
The trail passes through mesmerising landscapes of sprawling green valleys, vineyards, orchards and snow bound mountains. During the trail one can get to learn about the culture, language of the local people. Previously the circuitous route was about 200 Km long but now the route distance has been shortened.
Best Season: May - September
Max. Elevation: 5242m
Duration of the Trek: 7 days
The Kinnaur Kailash (locally known as Kinner Kailash) is a mountain in the Kinnaur district of the Indian state Himachal Pradesh. The Kinnaur Kailash has a height of 6050 meters and is considered as sacred by both Hindu and Buddhist Kinnauris. This mountain is sometimes confused with the Mount Kailash in Tibet. The Kinnaur Kailash Range borders the district of Kinnaurin the south and is dominated by the Kinnaur Kailash (elevation- 6050m) and Jorkanden (elevation- 6473m) peaks.[1] Jorkanden is the highest peak in the Kinner-Kailash range; one can admire it comfortably from a bungalow at Kalpa. Often mistaken with Kinner Kailash (which is a smaller holy pillar to north of it). Jorkanden has been climbed by the I.T.B.P IN 1974 and by the IndianPara Regiment in 1978.[2] The pass accessible on the trek is the Charang La at an altitude of 5300m. It is one of the toughest treks in Himachal Pradesh.

Legend[edit]

As per legend, this shrine existed since the time of Bhasmasur, the deadly Asur (demon) who received a boon from the deity Lord Shiva after great penance, which entailed that any person's head touched by him will be turned into ashes (bhasma). Upon receiving this gift, he tried to turn Lord Shiva into ashes as he wished to possess Parvati, which would only be possible upon his death. Lord Shiva stayed in hiding, changing locations often, and then finally came to Kinnaur Kailash. He resided here for some time meditating. Lord Vishnu eventually helped him to slay the Asur, appearing to him as a woman and getting him to place his hand upon his own head, thereby killing Bhasmasur.

    Introduction:

The Chandratal-Baralacha Trek takes the trekkers all over the majestic Himalayas to explore the cold and dry mountain desert of Spiti and Lahaul Valley while passing across Bara Shigri Glacier, the biggest glacier in Himachal Pradesh. The route further takes us through the beautiful Chandratal Lake at an altitude of 4270 meters. Chandratal, which means the Lake of Moon, is shaped like a half moon and is set on a large meadow of edelweiss within a lower ridge and the main Kunzum range. The trek to Chandratal, the “Moon Lake" is almost like going to the moon and the region brings the feeling as if the explorer has been to a new place for the very first time. And the most eligible reason for such feeling is that the landscape and the environment of the whole region keep on changing with every sighting much better than before. And once you are at the lake the world just stands still and the trekkers faint into another world.  The lake truly magnetizes anyone and a glorious trek to this region is moderately difficult type and brings an opportunity to ascent across an altitude of 4800 m without much difficulty.
The Chandratal- Baralacha trek ends on top of the Baralacha Pass (4830 m), which marks the highest point of the trek. From there, the tourists can go back by jeep and can have a stopover in Keylong (optional). This is a perfect trek during monsoon time, since there is no rain in this fascinating valley.

    DETAILS:

Chandertal is at an altitude of 4270 metres and lies between the main Kunzum ridge and low ridge. The lake is believed to be the source of the river Chandra and is also called the 'Moon Lake'.
The trek from Baralacha to Chandertal is comparatively an easier trek and the beautiful vistas that open up as you gain altitude present such magnificent views of the lake bounding with turquoise blue and crystal clear waters that you have an out-of-the-world feeling.
The lake at Chandertal is surrounded by the majestic Chandrabhaga and Mulkila massifs and provides for a serene and sublime atmosphere. This trek, being a relatively easier one, allows you to ascend to a height of 4,800 metres without much hardship.
